The night

Cheerfully, we left the hostel

Kami berlapan bertolak dengan riangnya selepas Isyak & tiba di VRL station Belgaum tepat jam 9.20pm. Bas ke Bangalore pula dijangka tiba jam 9.30pm. Masing2 unload beg keluar. Gambar demi gambar diambil, saat2 terakhir di Belgaum. Tiada yang sedar apa yang bakal menanti....9.40pm berlalu, bas tidak kunjung tiba.

The company called Talhah, saying the bus were already waiting. But, where are they, we were stone age waiting here.Takde pun. Uncle Ashfak (driver bas USMKLE) tiba-tiba bergegas menuju ke ruang driver...

Come innnn!! CEPATT2!! Bus not here, lake!!

Rupa-rupanya bas tidak tunggu kami di sini. Oh my God....Sympathetic chain stimulated. Maka seperti askar, masing2 reload beg semula. Go, Go, Go! Bas kami memecut umpama Ferrari menuju ke stesen bas VRL yang 1 lagi di tasik. Laju gila... Aku turun berlari  mencari bas. Di mana? tak jumpa...macam-macam bertalu di fikiran....adakah kami sudah ditinggalkan??Peluh membasahi diri, walaupun Belgaum sudah nyaman waktu itu....

Huh. itu dia. VRL 964, berhenti di simpang jalan. Jumpa. Tapi, bas ada masalah pickup & tak boleh jalan. Ah, apa pula sekarang. Enjin tak boleh start pula. Bas di India hanya satu pada satu2 masa, bukan setiap 30 min seperti di Malaysia. Kami terlepas yang ini, dan kami akan terlepas Malaysia....

Dengan izin Allah, maka bas boleh bergerak. Lega dan tak terkata. Maka bermulalah perjalanan 400km 10 jam Belgaum-Bangalore menaiki bas. 5 Ramadhan, kami sahur di atas bas berbekalkan oreo, kurma dan air masak saja.

Tiba di Bangalore dalam jam 7.30am. Destinasi seterusnya-Gokula. Macam biasa, pakcik2 auto yang cuba menggoreng kami dengan tambang yang sangat mahal. Tawar saja, sampai dapat harga ok. Mereka pun jarang dapat customer & perlukan duit, & kami pun perlu sampai ke Gokula.Masing-masing ada permainan sendiri.... 

7.45am. Sampai di rumah member di Gokula. Masing2 penat, angkat beg 25kg naik turun tangga di bulan puasa memang mencabar. Ini barulah cabaran oversea...Kami disambut oleh tuan rumah KN dan kucing Parsi gebu yang kami gelar Grumpy Cat haha.

Flight pukul 5.30pm. Takkan mahu duduk saja berjam2 di apartment? Dahlah bangalore ni jarang pergi (second time for me after Wonderla in December). The board decided, untuk jalan2 di Orion Mall, Bangalore, @ Alamanda di Malaysia. Hmm, time nak berjalan tak rasa penat pulak kan? Pelik...

Di Orion ini, semuanya orang kasta tinggi. Budak2 pun sudah ada smartphone. Teruja sungguh. macam2 premis ada, termasuklah ZARA. Kami lelaki, mana ada jiwa nak shopping. Nak makan pun, bulan puasa. So, destinasi pertama is Bowling yang dijuarai oleh Al-Fadhil Helmi Hamid, jaguh bowling kelapa di Grik. Yang bestnya, score above 120 dapat air tin free. Pun boleh...

Destinasi seterusnya ialah ke arked. Kali terakhir main ialah di Alamanda zaman KMB dahulu. Semua melepaskan naluri kebudak-budakkan. Hampir semua kami balun- basketball, tennis, gitar, motor, kereta, etc. Kami balun arked sehingga jam 1.30pm. Semua mengeluh penat. Hai, main arked pun penat??!!

Dengan kepenatan main arked, kami pulang ke Gokula untuk bersiap-siap ke airport. Dan dalam kepenatan itu juga, kami dipenatkan lagi dengan menarik beg 25kg turun naik tangga lagi. Mak aih...Memang dah tak larat betul dah time tu. Kami meninggalkan apartment dengan berat hati walaupun tak sampai sehari menetap. 

Selamat tinggal Grumpy Cat......Selamat tinggal KN......Malaysia, here we come....

The airport

Petang, 4pm tiba di Bangalore International Airport. Security di sana sangat ketat dengan guard yang pegang rifle- sama seperti sewaktu di Airport Srinagar, Kashmir dahulu. Nak snap pic pun takut. Check in sudah, security check pun sudah, tapi...

Aku dah lepas security, tapi Haziq & Kaya tak lepas....

Kaya & Haziq tak lepas security. Patutlah mereka duk lama depan counter tu je. Mengikut officer tu, FRO mereka tak valid. What?? FRO x valid means you will be trapped in India forever. Ini tak boleh jadi. Jam sudah 4.30pm. Boarding gate tutup 20 min sebelum departure (5.00pm). Itu maksudnya 4.40pm!! 10min.......kami ada 10minit.....apa boleh buat?? dah check in tak boleh cross balik....Talhah cuba jumpa security. Dia langsung tak kisah pasal kami. Aku call Kaya, risau dan gelisah...

Katanya tengah deal & dalam pengesahan....

 Huh, lepas juga. Lega kami. Tatkala itu juga aku sedar yang departure time kami ialah 5.30pm sebenarnya, bukan 5.00pm. Stress-yang betul jadi tak betul, yang tak betul jadi gila....

Alhamdulillah semua selamat. Tiada yang tersekat permanent di airport. Kami menjejakkan kaki dalam plane. Suasana di luar hujan, seolah-olah menangisi pemergian kami....seolah-olah sedih kami meninggalkan bumi India ini.....

Kapten mengumumkan penerbangan. Ya, dalam bahasa Melayu!! selain penghuni USMKLE, inilah kali pertama kami mendengarnya. Pramugara juga cakap bahasa Melayu. Ah, rindunya daku akan tanah air!

Maka berbuka puasalah  kami di atas kapal terbang setelah diumumkan oleh kapten. Flight makan masa 5 jam. Kilat sabung menyabung di luar, walaupun tak kedengaran. Gelap. Zero visibility dari tingkap.

Perjalanan kami sangat memeningkan. Angin kencang berlaga dengan kapal terbang, menyebabkan kapal bergegar dan bergoyang2 sepanjang perjalanan. Tepat jam 12.05am, 16 July 2013, tayar kapal terbang menjejakkan tayar di bumi Malaysia. 

Malaysia, Aku sudah sampai......

Perjalanan kami pulang saja sudah berliku-liku.Ujian memang akan menanti tidak kira di mana jua kita berada.  Apa pula nasib kami selama 6 minggu di rumah ini? Wallahualam, semoga ia penuh bermanfaat, untuk kami pelajar perubatan & bakal doktor untuk masa hadapan. Sekian.

VIVA Voce interview

Not only the interview, but before it, during it, and after it was the most pulsating moment, quite unnerving for me. Its all started when I am watching movies (well, PRO exam has ended). My colleague (Hafizuddin) knocked my door, and asked me to sign the golden manuscript- The list of VIVA candidates....

Wahh...after days of worrying about my lame OSPE (due to nervousness, I mistakenly read waist circumference of the subject as 62cm, which should be 92cm), finally, I was granted by this oppurtunity, so do to 10 others. 

So, after this great news, I finished those movies first, and exactly after that struggling to search for info, particularly seniors blog about Viva interview. Only God knows how hard it is to reopen all the lecturers slide, notes, books etc. This was far more extreme than examination; covering all topics in just half a day. Finally, I succumbed to my very own desk-tersedar dari tidur saja dah masuk Asar... =.=

Till that night, many people were congratulating me and wishing me Good Luck. In fb, while meeting, whatsapp etc.... I only smiled and replied thanks. I cant taste those wishes. It feels so bitter. I dont know why...maybe I was too stressed out...

The VIVA Day

It was the last day of Syaaban. That morning, I felt like being stirred with anxiety, enthusiast, spirit and worry. All of the 11 excellent students were divided into Group A and B (Im in the A Group), and were quarantined in Lecture Hall. Well, at first, semua orang duk bising tanya mcm2:

     -eh, mana insertion muscle ni eh....etc3

     -mcm mana nk tau bone kiri ke kanan eh etc3...

     -cerita sikit pasal alpha & gamma motor neuron, nuclear chain ke nuclear bag eh??

.......and the lists keep on continuing. I kept all the question to myself. My last time revision style- is to keep quiet & listen...Then the assistant announced it, the very que of the interview.... she summoned my name. That time, my ANS were jumbled. I dont sweat, but I could feel minor shakes in my whole body. Im not hyperventilating, but my heartbeat were so strong that I could hear it. A few steps walking outside, than I entered the PBL room.

3 lecturers were sitting happily, watching me carefully as I greeted and asked permission from them to have a sit. The HOD of Anatomy, Professor Sandhya VMD, arranged in front of her 4 real human bones- skull, scapula, femur & clavicle. Holy dude, senior punya 1 saje bone, kami punya VIVA kena 4 sekali terus....The other 2 were an unknown Mr external examiner, im expecting him from Biochemistry Department of USMKK, & Professor Rajashree from Physiology Department. 

-Shall we start.....Prof Sandhya voiced out. Choose any bone you wish...

-I can choose mam?

-Yeah you can choose anyone to start with, later we will ask them all...

Gulp...

Anatomy session started, and I picked the skull, from my opinion, is my expertise. I was asked about structure passing through foramen ovale & magnum. The difference between VIVA & written examination is it require you to have an implanted, permanent memory & knowledge about a particular matter. No time to think, immediate reaction is needed. For foramen magnum, I answered:

 -brainstem. 

-Which part of brainstem

-Medulla...

-Other than that? (very immediate after my answer)

-err.....spinal part of accessory nerve...

-other than that?

-Err...... mam, Im not sure, can I have another foramen?? 

Later, clavicle and femur were asked. Though I managed to answered it, but it was not so perfect from my opinion.

Then shifting to biochemistry, where my first question was very bombarding-to state the serum level of bilirubin. I said I dont know. Then, Im asked about the test to detect bilirubin. The only things came out on my mind was the simple dipstick test, which he later said that it isnt. It is the Van der Bergh test, and I was asked to describe the procedure. Mother nature, tak pernah tau pun wujud test ini....However, his other questions were quite interesting, about Ca, Vit D and their relations to hypocalcemia. Im so lucky that I remember the serum level of Calcium. The funny moment was when he asked me about the source of vitamin D. My answer:

-it is mainly sunlight sir.

-sunlight? it is a fat soluble vitamin. How come it is derived from sunlight??

-Err, maybe animal source sir?

-Animals only? Is there no plant source for Vitamin D??

Ahh, rasa macam kena bom saja di situ...

The last session was Physiology, were the most weird question asked. the function of hypothalamus. I managed to answer homeostasis, head of ANS, hormonal control. Later she asked about a thing, most neglected lectures in physiology, in fact, she was the one who taught us this topic........the Limbic System...

She ask its component, I only remember 2 of them. She ask its functions, I gave her 3. Later, she shifted to DM, to state its symptoms

I was asked about satiety & hunger center also. She also asked me to relate them with DM. Holy, I just cant think straight this time. My answer:

-In diabetic patient insulin levels are high, so...(I noticed her face berkerut2, terus terlupa nak cakap apa)...well....err,.... Im not sure mam...

-Think back, in diabetes patient, what happened?

-I just dont know how to relate those two..

Well, thats the end of the interview. Stepping out of the room, I remembered that I just said something wrong in Physio session....

In diabetic patient, it is not INSULIN level which are high, it is GLUCOSE level!! no wonder muka Prof kerut2 tadi...

I also forget to mention vertebral artery passing through foramen magnum. Why?? Why I only realized all of these after the interview had ended?!! The day were quite frustrating for me. I felt that I didnt give them enough impression to select me as distinction students. I reopened the lecturer slide about limbic system, hypothalamus, and DM, and I felt like my knowledge in medic were no more than the thickness of an onion skin....

The announcement

The next day the result of Phase 1 MD Professional Examination were announced by Professor Kamaruddin. It was the first of Ramadhan. Syukur, all of us had passed. Next come the very impulsive moment of the day-announcement for distinction students. I felt so empty, I felt that I didnt care about the outcome knowing, since I believed that I had tried my best in the interview. 

How shocked I am to be announced as one of the 4 distinction students! Prof KJ asked me to stand. I did it, while almost unnoticing the big applause given to me by my colleagues. I was celebrated. I was cheered. But, I was too speechless that time. Alhamdulillah, all of my effort paid off. Still, I keep reminding myself that my journey as a doctor was just at the beginning. 

This VIVA teach me about the learning process. I realized that so many clinical implications were unknown to me. I learned that though I got all the knowledge, if I were unable to tell what I know properly, it just wont work. My determination for the Second Year is, to have a complete, holistic and  practical understanding in medic. In Shaa Allah.

Well, after hours and days of frustation, finally Ive come up thinking something. Why would I wait for the lives, since I can bend the time as I wish- Its my smartphone. Hence, after several trial and error, Ive produced this steps, for those guys who wish to be faster in this game.

It is not a cheat I stressed here. It is just manipulating the preexisting system - by travelling TIME! Here is the secret to immortality in Candy Crush Saga

1- Exit the Candy Crush apps.
2-Go to Setting

3)Go to Date and Time

4)Untick all the boxes

5)Add 3 hours from existing time

  

6)Open Candy Crush apps. Your lives will be full. But, it is not over yet.

7)Exit back the apps. Make sure you end the program at theTask Manager also. Swipe it off. 

8) Go back to Setting>Date and time. Tick the --Automatic Date & Time-- box

9) You would see that the time will come back to normal. Then, you can enjoy. If you ran out of 5 lives. Exit the apps, and repeat these steps again.

Notes:

*This method is true as for Samsung Note. Im not pretty sure about others, but more than less the concept are the same

* Do not correct the time manually by subtracting back 3 hours. You would end up waiting for hundreds or thousands of minutes

*Make sure the addition of 3 hours does not result in changes in date to the next day. If this happens, it wouldnt work, and you also need to wait......very long. So, play during the day dude.

Medic di India - USM-KLE satu pilihan

Welcome to USM KLE International Medical Program

Pendaftaran telahpun dibuka.  Pada saat-saat kuota pelajar perubatan ke luar negara terpaksa dikurangkan, mereka yang berjiwa kental untuk menyambung pengajian dalam bidang Perubatan mesti ada terbaca tentang program USM KLE IMP, satu kolaborasi antara India dan Malaysia untuk memartabatkan pendidikan. Sebelum 2 Jun 2013.

USM korang mesti tau. KLE stands for Karnataka Lingayat Education & IMP (International Medical Program. KLE merupakan satu badan/yayasan pendidikan yang sangat terkenal di India. Satu program course MD, 5 tahun dan bermula tahun 2010 (setakat ini baru ada 3 batch sahaja).

Kelayakan untuk masuk taklah susah. Kalau IB 34 pun dapat, CGPA matrix 3.7, MUET band 3, lulus ujian personaliti (ape entah nama test ni, x ingat, something macam Munsyi...) dan lulus interview. SPM macam mana?? Tidak diambil kira pun, asalkan korang lulus, then masuk matrix, then bolehlah apply based on result matrix.

USMKLE cemerlang dengan rekod exam PRO 100% lulus 2 tahun berturut-turut. Manakan tidak, suasana untuk belajar di sini amatlah condusive. Meh aku cerita sikit.

Sedikit insight tentang hostel

-Facility hostel (ada hostel sendiri tu) yang comparatively selesa, siap internet port. Takyah dok pikir nak bayar broadband bulan-bulan macam kat college dulu.

- Jarak dari hostel  ke campus is lima minit berjalan kaki sahaja. 

- Lecture Hall yang sederhana besar (back benchers can still clearly see lecturer in front)

- Ada sesi demo di samping sesi lecture untuk kasi 3D understanding. Ilmu anatomi korang komfem akan berkilat2 sebab ada banyak model untuk            

digunakan sebagai rujukan.

-Kemudahan mikroskop yang abundant; ratio mikroskop to student is 1:2. Maka takdelah case macam   

  zaman2 sekolah@kolej dulu berebut2 nak tengok slide. Plus, the slide is ready made for you to see.

-Lecturer yang Masha Allah, boleh aku kata macam library bergerak. Among them:

   -- Dr. Vishnu MD....boleh ceritakan course of artery dari common carotid a. & its branches keatas, dan
       ke bawah, kemana-mana sahaja.

   -- Dr. Iyer K......antara editor buku Grays Anatomy, buku rujukan anatomi yang paling dikenali di seluruh  

       dunia since cetakan pertamanya tahun 1858

   -- Dr. Sadanand BP.... boleh describe TCA cycle, glycolysis and apa2 cycle yang dia suka dari mana-  

       mana intermediate, as well as menyebut phosphohexoseisomerase & phosphogluconolactone tanpa 

       terbelit lidah, haha

   --Dr Oswal KH......penghasil model dan chart2 anatomi utama bagi student2 medic di India melalui   

      syarikatnya Oswal Publications (or productions x ingat lak). Ingat, umur beliau sudah 79 tahun, tapi 

      memorinya sangat tajam!

-Tidak dilupakan juga harga buku yang sangat murah di India. Pengalaman Aku menguruskan pembelian  

  buku untuk batch, kebanyakan buku berharga bawah Rs1000@RM59 sebuah. Mana korang nak cari weii 

  kat tempat lain buku medic tebal ratus2 page harga camni.??

-Bilangan pelajar yang sedikit, macam batch aku just 59 orang. Senang untuk lecturer lecture korang, dan 

 korang jumpa lecturer. They are very2 friendly to us, foreign students.

-Cerita yang korang dengar pasal India banyak mayat tu, memang betul. Supply cadaver adalah continous. Plenty of  dissected cadaver are there untuk korang tengok2. Satu peluang yang tiada di Malaysia, dan sangat terhad di Universiti2 lain.

-Pelajar-pelajar USMKLE akan mendapat baucar buku 1M setiap tahun, berbeza dengan pelajar oversea 

 negara lain. Of course la kena guna kat Msia, takkan nak guna kat sini pulak, haha.

- Ada kelas untuk bahasa Kannada (local language) & Hindi sikit2. So, peminat bollywood memang mudah
   menjiwai cerita favourite anda lepas ni.

-Bagi student lelaki, ada bas disediakan untuk ke masjid Solat Jumaat. Inilah masanya korang nak berjumpa 

  dengan umat Islam mazhab lain (Hanafi).

Enjoy2 lah belajar di negara orang ni^^

Well, memang ada ranjau dan cabaran lain. The whole batch is from Malaysian students only, tak campur dengan local students. Ia hanyalah minor, almost tak akan kacau focus study korang. So, harap-harap adalah mereka yang berminat ke sini. Penat promote kott, haha. Credit to Akhyar Doctorgraphy kerana berikan inspirasi untuk aku menulis pulak. Sekian.
